Introduction to Calla Lilies

Calla lilies (Zantedeschia) are among the most elegant and sophisticated flowers in the garden world. Despite their name, they’re not true lilies but belong to the arum family. These stunning plants are prized for their distinctive trumpet-shaped flowers (technically spathes) and glossy, arrow-shaped leaves.

Native to South Africa, calla lilies have become beloved worldwide for their architectural beauty and long-lasting blooms. They’re perfect for both garden borders and container growing, making them versatile additions to any landscape.

Types of Calla Lilies

White Calla Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica)

  • Classic variety with pure white blooms
  • Largest flowers up to 10 inches long
  • Height: 2-3 feet tall
  • Hardy in zones 8-10, semi-aquatic

Colored Calla Lilies (Zantedeschia hybrids)

  • Pink varieties: ‘Pink Mist’, ‘Pink Melody’
  • Purple varieties: ‘Purple Sensation’, ‘Dark Eyes’
  • Yellow varieties: ‘Golden Chalice’, ‘Flame’
  • Orange/Red varieties: ‘Red Alert’, ‘Mango’

Dwarf Varieties

  • ‘Little Gem’: Compact white variety, 12-18 inches
  • ‘Childsiana’: Miniature version, perfect for containers
  • Height range: 8-18 inches

When to Plant Calla Lilies

Timing by Climate Zone

Zones 8-11: Plant rhizomes in fall (October-November) for spring blooms Zones 3-7: Plant in spring after soil warms to 65°F (after last frost)

Indoor Starting

  • Start indoors: 4-6 weeks before last frost date
  • Transplant outdoors: When soil temperature reaches 65°F consistently
  • Container growing: Plant anytime with proper indoor conditions

Soil Requirements

Ideal Soil Conditions

  • Well-draining yet moisture-retentive soil
  • Rich in organic matter: Add compost or aged manure
  • pH level: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.0)
  • Depth: Plant rhizomes 2-4 inches deep

Soil Preparation Steps

  1. Test soil drainage by digging a hole and filling with water
  2. Amend clay soil with compost and coarse sand
  3. Improve sandy soil with compost and peat moss
  4. Add organic fertilizer before planting
